Civil status matters
Please note that any changes in marital status, name changes and birth of children must be notified to the Swiss authorities. Failure to provide accurate documentation will cause delays in the issuing of new Swiss documents.
The role of the Swiss missions abroad is to report changes in the status of Swiss nationals (birth, marriage, divorce, death, adoption) which have taken place abroad to the relevant authorities in Switzerland so that they may be entered in the Family Register. This includes certifying and translating the relevant documents.
Swiss citizens are therefore asked to present all required documents to the Swiss Embassy. The original documents are kept by the Registry Office at the place of origin for registration purposes. You may at any time obtain further original certified copies from the Registration, Insolvency and Trusteeship Agency (RITA) in Dar es Salaam (see link).
Please note that all civil matters (birth, wedding, divorce, death) that have taken place in Tanzania have to be registered at the central Registry Office in Dar es Salaam (RITA).
