Visa requirements

Since 12 December 2008 Switzerland is an associated member state of the Schengen agreement and hence part of the Schengen area. The Schengen regulations apply for the entry and a stay that is not subject to authorisation up to three months. For individuals who are required to hold a visa, Switzerland will issue Schengen visas for a stay up to three months that are valid for the whole Schengen area.

Visa applications must be submitted to the Swiss Embassy/Consulate covering your place of residence. Citizens of Tanzania are required to apply for a visa to enter Switzerland. For other nationals, please consult the webpage of the Swiss Office of Migration.

All Non-Tanzanians holding a valid Tanzanian resident permit can apply for their visa at Swiss Embassy in Dar es Salaam. The valid re-entry permit has to be stamped in their passport. One photocopy of the residence permit or re-entry visa is required.

Applications for visas must be submitted personally to the Visa Section of the Embassy of Switzerland in Dar es Salaam. The visa section is open from Monday to Friday between 8 a.m. and 12 noon. (No appointment).

Please note that it takes at least three working days after the reception of the complete file to collect the passport. The visa application shall be submitted at least 7 (seven) working days before the date of departure.

Application forms can be obtained at the Embassy of Switzerland in Dar es Salaam or by downloading and printing the visa application form on the right. Please consult the visa information sheet on this page for information on how to apply for different types of visas.

Incomplete applications will not be accepted. Please note that missing photocopies will not be provided through this Embassy. All documents must be submitted in original with a photocopy for the file. If there is no photocopy submitted, the original document will be kept in the file.

A travel/health/accident insurance with minimum medical coverage of the TZS equivalent of Euro 30'000,00 is requested. The insurance must be valid in all Schengen countries and for the whole period of staying in the Schengen area.

Each application is checked individually and no guarantee can be given that a visa will be issued. The Embassy cannot be held responsible for costs involved when a visa is refused. Please note that in certain cases the application has to be submitted to the authorities in Switzerland. In such cases, it may take some weeks until a decision is taken (up to 12 weeks).

Attention
The border authorities are obliged to examine whether the conditions for the traveller's entry or transit still apply. If the prerequisites for entry or transit no longer apply or if your are unable to provide the relevant evidence, you may be refused entry although you are in possession of a valid visa.
It is therefore strongly recommended that you carry copies of the documents (e.g. letters of invitation, travel confirmations) which you supplied with your visa application.
