If you wish to get married in Switzerland, you should start proceedings at least 3 – 5 months prior to your marriage. Generally more time is needed if documents from outside of Hong Kong are involved.

You should first contact the Swiss Marriage Registry (“Zivilstandsamt” in German or “Service de l’état civil” in French) of your choice to check on the availability of your preferred wedding date. Contact information can be made available upon request.

Next you should obtain and prepare all documents listed on the check list “Preparation for Marriage in Switzerland – Required Documents” (see column on the right).

Once you have all of your documents ready, please make an appointment with this Consulate General to sign the relevant forms 034 and 035 in the presence of a consular officer as well as to submit all of your documents.

If your fiancé(e) is residing in Switzerland, he or she will submit his or her documents directly to the Swiss Marriage Registry of your marriage place.

The consular fee for processing your marriage application varies from case to case and depends if documents from outside of Hong Kong and/or a Swiss residence permit application (see below) is involved. The fee will be anywhere between HKD 1'350 – HKD 3'500. Please be aware that there will be additional charges from the Marriage Registry in Switzerland.

After your appointment with this Consulate General your documents will be forwarded to the competent authorities in Switzerland (or other Swiss representations abroad if documents from outside of Hong Kong are involved) for approval, which will take several months.

If you require a visa to enter Switzerland you will have to await the completion of your marriage preparation application abroad before being able to travel or move to Switzerland.

Living in Switzerland after your marriage
If you intend to live in Switzerland after your marriage with a Swiss citizen or a Swiss resident, please submit your application for a residence permit (“Visa D”) in triplicate (3) to this office together with four (4) photos. You will also have to apply for a Certificate of No Criminal Conviction issued by the Hong Kong Police (see web link below) with a recommendation letter from this Consulate General.

The processing of your application for a residence permit may take 3 – 5 months (until your application for marriage preparation is approved once all foreign documents have been checked, translated, legalized and approved by the Swiss authorities). 


Religious marriage
A religious marriage is optional and may take place only once you are legally married.
