Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy
The energy efficiency programme in India focuses on small industries and large energy consuming buildings. In the case of small industries, GPCC capitalizes on its long engagement in this sector to replicate and scale up. In the building sector, the programme focuses on mobilizing the Swiss know-how and makes it available to Indian stakeholders to contribute to India’s efforts at developing an energy efficient building sector.
The Renewable Energy programme builds on its earlier work on clean technology development in the area of biomass gasification and micro-hydro. The programme takes advantage of supporting a conducive policy environment and also proposes to contribute to the development policy and programmes to enhance the share of renewable energy in an equitable and sustainable manner.
On-going Programmes
Currently the portfolio has following on-going programmes:
- Promoting Energy Efficiency in Small Scale Industries
The goal of the programme is to obtain energy savings of 20 to 30 percent in micro, small and medium enterprises, thereby reducing the CO2 emissions in the sector. The focus small scale industry sectors of this programme are Brick, Foundry and Glass; and energy efficiency in biomass based micro, small and medium enterprises. The programme is being implemented in partnership with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI).
- Village Electrification through Sustainable use of Renewable Energy (VE-SuRE)
The goal of this project is that the enhanced availability of sustainable energy emerges as a poverty reduction tool and a harbinger of socio-economic advancement in remote rural areas. The expected outcomes of this project are that the decentralised renewable power gains prominence in electricity policies and rural electricity plans in select states and there is adoption of renewable energy technologies in remote villages by community. The project is being implemented under cooperation with National Thermal Power Corporation (NTPC) to mainstream decentralised distributed generation for rural electrification.
- Building Energy Efficiency Project
The specific objectives of the programme is to build capacities and knowledge of Indian builders, architects, engineers, labs, institutions and other stakeholders, in the area of energy efficiency in buildings and to establish a technical building performance framework and disseminate best practices in public and residential buildings.
Up-coming Programmes
The portfolio is in the process of developing the following programmes:
- Accelerating use of Biomass Based Energy Systems for Clean Energy Services
The upcoming programme aims to accelerate the use of biomass based energy systems so that rural communities and small enterprises secure access to clean energy services. The programme offers a new opportunity to organise the biomass supply for clean energy use as well as technology upgradation for accelerating diffusion of biomass energy based clean energy systems in order to achieve a level of mass appeal and their acceptance as a mainstream energy solution.
- Decentralized Renewable Energy to Provide Access to Electricity: Building Policy and Regulatory Frameworks
The objective of this proposed programme is to enable formulation of policy and regulatory frameworks for the development of centralised and decentralised renewable electricity generation to provide access to reliable, affordable and clean electricity.
