What we do

The Consular and Administrative Services' section of the Embassy of Switzerland in Riyadh acts as a link between the Swiss residing in the Embassy's consular district and their home country for registration, issuance of passports and other documents of identification, assistance to Swiss in need, etc. Furthermore, the section issues visa for applicants residing in the Embassy's consular district (except the Sultanate of Oman) wishing to travel to Switzerland and fulfils the administrative functions within the Embassy's operations such as accounting, human resources, safety issues, contingency plan and technical maintenance.

Consular district

The consular district of the Embassy of Switzerland in Riyadh comprises the northern & eastern provinces, the provinces of Al Jawf, Hail, Qasim, Riyadh (for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia), the Sultanate of Oman and the Republic of Yemen.

Registration

The Consular Section at the Embassy of Switzerland in Riyadh and the Swiss Consulate General in Muscat will be pleased to assist you. Swiss citizens or visa applicants living in the Republic of Yemen should forward the correspondence related to a consular and administrative issue directly to the Swiss Embassy in Riyadh.

A regular contact between the Swiss abroad and the Swiss Embassies and Consulates presents mutual advantages. Also, registration is compulsory for Swiss citizens residing abroad and is the basis for official acts. The following individuals should register with their local Swiss mission abroad:

  • Swiss citizens who intend to stay in the consular district for more than 12 months
  • Individuals living in the consular district who acquire Swiss nationality by birth, naturalisation or adoption.

The following documents are required for registration:

  • form "Application for registration", duly completed, dated and signed by the applicant (can be downloaded by using the link on the right hand side of this page)
  • Swiss passport and, if applicable, those of your family members
  • Original of the certificate of origin (Heimatschein / Certificat d’origine).

It is also highly recommended to download the “Advice for Swiss citizens living abroad" and the "Information regarding behaviour in crisis situations" containing useful details.

Your personal documents will be returned to you immediately after registration. For additional details about the Voluntary Old-age, Survivors and Disability Insurance scheme (AHV / IV – AVS / AI), the Soliswiss or if you wish to obtain further information for Swiss citizens living abroad, please do consult the corresponding pages of links included in this Website.

Changes in marital status, name changes, and the birth of children must be notified to the Swiss authorities through the Swiss representation. Failure to provide accurate documentation will cause delays in the issuing of new Swiss documents.

For safety reason Swiss citizens planning a short trip to Saudi Arabia and the Republic of Yemen (business, tourism) are requested to communicate in advance their travel program (including last & first name, passport number and address in CH) to the competent Swiss representation abroad.

We wish you a pleasant stay in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Voting right
Since 1 July 1992 Swiss nationals living abroad have the possibility to participate in the political life without having to travel to Switzerland to do so. In fact, as a Swiss national resident abroad you can exercise your political rights by mail if you are at least 18 years old and are registered with the Swiss Embassy competent for your place of residence. At a time when Switzerland faces increasingly complex choices, especially in international affairs, domestic political debate can be enriched by contributions from all the communities which make up our country. And that also includes you. We therefore like to encourage you to actively participate in the federal elections and in referenda. Should you be interested, please do order the corresponding form by calling your embassy or consulate.

Signing initiatives and referendum petitions

If, as a Swiss national living abroad, you wish to sign federal popular petitions, you can request the material directly from the relevant initiative or referendum committee and append your signature at your place of residence abroad. On the list of signatures you must indicate your electoral commune and the relevant canton, besides your personal details; your residential address abroad is regarded as your place of residence. If you are temporarily staying in Switzerland (holiday, business) you can also append your signature on the lists in your electoral commune. The "Swiss Review" regularly publishes the addresses of the various initiative and referendum committees.
