Bilateral relations between Switzerland and the Czech Republic
Relations between Switzerland and the Czech Republic are close and problem-free, especially on the level of civil society. In the aftermath of the Prague Spring (1968) some 10,000 Czechoslovakian refugees were welcomed in Switzerland. In 1992 the Czech and Slovak republics separated. Switzerland recognized both the new states at the beginning of 1993 and assumed diplomatic relations with them. During the transition phase of the 1990s, The Czech Republic was a priority country for Swiss assistance to Eastern Europe. The Swiss Confederation provided support for a series of projects representing a total worth of CHF 50 million.
The economic relations between the two countries are unfolding in a positive manner. The Czech Republic numbers among Switzerland’s key trading partners within the scope of the new EU Member States, and it is a prominent target country for Swiss investors active in Central Europe.
There are intensive cultural exchanges between the two countries. Prague is a veritable European cultural metropolis, attracting numerous appearances by Swiss artists of every kind. Switzerland takes part in various major theater, film, and music festivals in the Czech Republic.
As a member of the European Union, the Czech Republic numbers among the beneficiaries of the Swiss Contribution to the Reduction of the Economic and Social Disparities in the enlarged European Union.
