Political and Legal Affairs
The Political Section informs the Swiss authorities about political decisions and U.S. policy trends and priorities that are of importance to Switzerland (namely promoting democracy, combating terrorism and nonproliferation of weapons of mass destruction). It also informs the U.S. authorities about Swiss priorities (promoting peace, abolishing the death penalty, respecting human rights, upholding international law including the Geneva Conventions and combating the financing of terrorism).
The Section’s extensive network of contacts enables it to carry out its work. In particular, it actively cultivates contacts with the Congressional Friends of Switzerland Caucus. An important instrument for promoting mutual understanding and defending Swiss interests are working visits to Washington by Swiss politicians and high level officials as well as similar visits to Bern by their U.S. counterparts.
A range of special tasks within the Political Section is entrusted to the legal counselor whose responsibilities include, among others, to follow the institutional and legal developments in the United States, to deal with cases implying treaties and other sources of international law, to observe human rights issues and generally support the Embassy in giving advice in legal affairs.
