Humanitarian activities

Millions of people all over the world are suffering from the consequences of wars, drought and other natural disasters, as well as technological disasters like the Chernobyl nuclear event. At such times people need international humanitarian aid. Switzerland’s humanitarian commitment is a mainstay of its foreign policy. It is recognized internationally, and firmly rooted in terms of domestic policy.

Switzerland’s commitment
  • Switzerland pursues its humanitarian policy in international forums such as the United Nations, working to improve the general conditions that govern humanitarian aid. It also contributes to international policy development.
  • As the Depositary State of the Geneva Conventions Switzerland promotes International Humanitarian Law and works to improve its implementation worldwide. The protection of the civilian population in armed conflicts is a central element of International Humanitarian Law.
  • Switzerland provides humanitarian aid in an effort to protect human life and dignity before, during and after a crisis.
