Diplomatic and consular protection
Switzerland provides its nationals abroad with consular and diplomatic protection.
Consular protection means the support given by Switzerland to its nationals in asserting their rights under the legal system of the state where they are present. Switzerland acts on behalf of its nationals and for their account.
Diplomatic protection means the assistance given by Switzerland to its nationals if they suffer injury in consequence of a breach of international law by the state where they are present. In this case Switzerland acts on its own behalf, because it is also considered to be an injured party.
