European Cross-Border Group (ECBG)Inter-cantonal coordination
The cantons coordinate their cross-border activities within Switzerland in various conferences:
- conference of cantonal governments
- interest group of cantons bordering France
- regional conference of the governments of North-West Switzerland
- conference of cantonal governments in Eastern Switzerland
- internal Swiss government conference
- conference of western Swiss cantons
- conference of the Alpine Cantons
Cross-border cooperation also exists at local-authority level. As local authorities cannot conclude treaties under international law, they rely for cross-border agreements on administrative or civil law on the basis of the applicable cantonal law.
Loose forms of cooperation
In addition to institutionalized cooperation there are also a variety of loose, informal contacts such as those between chambers of commerce on both sides of the border, between chambers of agriculture, employer federations, trade unions and other organizations.
