Information note on family regrouping

The spouse, same sex partner, unmarried partner of the principal beneficiary of a "B", "C", "D", "E", "I", "L" , "O" or "P" legitimation card and unmarried children who are under 25 years old may be admitted to Switzerland for the purpose of family regrouping on the condition that they live together in the household of the principal beneficiary. These persons receive the same type of legitimation card as the principal beneficiary. The same rule applies to the partner who has entered into a registered partnership with the principal beneficiary, as well as to his/her unmarried children who are under 25 years old.

In exceptional circumstances, parents as well as unmarried children who are older than 25 years old, and who are in each case entirely dependent on the principal beneficiary of a "B", "C", "D", "E", "I", "L" , "O" or "P" legitimation card and living together in the same household as the principal beneficiary, may be admitted to Switzerland for the purpose of family regrouping. These persons receive a legitimation card enabling them to reside in Switzerland (with the principal beneficiary), but bestowing no privileges and immunities.

The family members of an officials on short-term contracts (holder of a "G" legitimation card), of a non-civil servant or a person without privileges and immunities (holders of a "H" legitimation card) cannot be admitted to Switzerland for the purpose of family regrouping.

The members of personnel of permanent missions having a permanent residence in Switzerland (holders of a B or C permit) must conform to standard regulations with regard to the family regrouping.
